New winds are blowing through the Alcoholera of La Rioja, Ebro and Duero, settled in Cenicero since 1934 but renewed in the last year to address the demands of the sector from another perspective. First came the Italians to take over the company, a change of hands that the Randi Group (dedicated to making tartaric acid and cream of tartar), carried out last December, although they already had a labor relationship with it since 1993. And then they came those of Almería to launch a renewed and accessible alcohol store. Fernando and Rosa Durban are now in charge of putting this “recycling plant for wineries”, as they call it, at the customer’s service.

“We are a true example of sustainability, circular economy and zero waste that aims to give added value to the grape through the development of new natural products extracted from the waste and by-products of the wine industry that will go to the food, cosmetics industry. , pharmaceutics and wines”, remark the brothers, who did not hesitate for a moment to embark on this adventure together. «There is mutual trust and it is very easy to work together because we both defend that the key for this project to prosper is to do it with passion, integrity, responsibility, commitment, transparency, quality and research».

With the beginning of the harvest, the movement in the alcohol factory has already begun and the arrival of the first loaded trailers and containers. Through a “door-to-door” service and with a collection on demand, they go through the cellars to load kilos and kilos of pomace and lees that will have a second life after passing through these facilities. The one in Cenicero is one of the nearly 20 alcohol factories that are distributed throughout the country (with the highest concentration of these plants in Castilla – La Mancha) and one of the four that are located in the north of Spain together with the one in Barcelona. , Zaragoza and Navarra. But here supplies arrive beyond the borders of Rioja: Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Navarra, the Basque Country, Toro and Somontano are some of the producing regions that also use their services.

This is how the journalist Leire Díez from NueveCuatroUno explains this new stage of the Alcoholera.

At the beginning of 2022, a new stage began for La Alcoholera de La Rioja, Ebro and Duero. Moment in which the Italian group Randi acquires the La Rioja company and puts Fernando and Rosa Durban in charge, who take over from the previous administrators.

Avoiding looking back and looking only forward, the new managers take on the challenge of winning the trust of the winemakers and refilling the two silos with a capacity of up to 30 million kilos of pomace and lees.

The commitment to sustainability, the reduction of the carbon footprint and a circular economy business model with zero waste, are the keys on which a process revolves that begins with the collection of lees, pomace and wine from the wineries, to its transformation into new products that give a second life to this waste.

For Rosa Durban, director of La Alcoholera: “Listen to the wineries and offer the best service and conditions is now our priority, as is ensuring that the pomace and lees from the closest wine regions reach our silos, thus reducing carbon footprint as much as possible.
